Have you ever stared at that plastic wrap as you ripped it from the roll and thought, isn’t there a more earth-friendly way to wrap this piece of cheese? Now there is and it’s called Bee’s Wrap. Living on a farm in Vermont where she and her family grow much of their own food, Sarah Kaeck thought a lot about the limited range of healthy products she was using to store her food. After trying out some ideas on her friends, she came up with a product that’s all about natural fiber, plant extracts and those workhorses of nature, bees.

In her workshop in Bristol, Sarah combines her own recipe of beeswax from sustainably kept hives in the southwestern United States, organic jojoba oil and tree resin. She then dips organic cotton fabric (that’s Global Organic Textile Standard certified) into the mixture. Once dry, the firm but flexible fabric is cut into different sizes and packaged in envelopes made of 100% recycled material. Enclosed instructions tell you to warm up the wrap by crumpling it up in your hands before molding it to whatever you are storing.

The sandwich wraps are especially clever with their button ties. The wraps are completely washable using cold water and mild soap and can be used for most anything except meat. Bee’s Wrap is not only reusable, biodegradable and compostable but also antimicrobial. It’s widely available online and in kitchen supply stores and can also be ordered from the website Beeswrap.com.
