Composting is such a smart thing to do, and we all know that if we have not already started this magical process, we should. Bay and Josiah Jackson at Ironwood Design in Bristol want to help us get started with style. Step one is keeping those kitchen scraps and coffee grounds in a beautifully designed and handcrafted countertop bin that’s a pleasure to look at and easy to clean.

The Jacksons, both trained in the arts, decided three years ago to set up their own manufacturing and design business in Bristol. All their handcrafted pieces are made from sustainably harvested wood and reflect their appreciation for designs that are elegant and simple. Their countertop bin is one of their most popular items: a wooden box into which they insert a stainless-steel container with a fitted lid. The box comes in two sizes, 2.7- and 6.1-quart capacity.

Unlike other types of pre-composting countertop containers, this one has no charcoal filters, so you’ll need to get those scraps working outside in your real compost container rather than let them start the decomposition process in your kitchen. The insert is food-grade and dishwasher safe. These are available through Ironwoodbuildvt.com.
